Join Ventura Land Trust staff on a guided hike of Big Rock Preserve along the Ventura River. This easy 90-minute hike will cover a 2-mile loop in Big Rock Preserve with stops to learn about natural and cultural elements of the preserve. Big Rock is one of the only places between the coastal estuary and Matilija Canyon that has year-round water. This is due to the particular geology of the area, where the bedrock is very close to the Earth's surface. Endangered steelhead trout (Onchyrinchus mykiss) have been spotted at this preserve, as well as western pond turtles, herons, and bobcats.
Big Rock Preserve Water, sun protection, and closed-toe footwear are recommended. This hike is free and open to the public. The hike guide will meet participants in the parking area located beneath HWY33 at Casitas Vista Road. RSVP below.
