Ventura Land Trust FAQs

Our land stewardship strategy balances public recreation, preservation of scenic views, and enhancement of ecosystem values. Baseline studies are conducted in order to assess biological and cultural resources present on the land, and restoration and recreation plans are developed accordingly. Trails for hiking and cycling may be built depending on the area, and all potential land uses will be overseen by the experts on our stewardship committee.

Supporting Ventura Land Trust (VLT) goes beyond monetary contributions. Here are several impactful ways you can support our mission:

Volunteer: Get involved in our conservation efforts by volunteering your time. Help with trail maintenance, habitat restoration, or participate in special events and programs.

Spread Awareness: Share information about VLT and our projects with your friends, family, and community. Raise awareness about the importance of preserving local habitats and open spaces. .

Attend Events: Join us for community programs, guided hikes, or fundraising events. Your participation helps strengthen our community engagement efforts.

Donate Goods or Services: Consider donating goods or services that can benefit our organization, such as equipment for outdoor projects, professional skills (e.g., graphic design, legal expertise), or in-kind contributions.

Participate in Citizen Science: Contribute to our conservation efforts by participating in citizen science projects. Help collect data on wildlife and plants and upload it to iNaturalist.

If you encounter a rattlesnake while visiting a Ventura Land Trust (VLT) Preserve, it's important to remain calm and take appropriate precautions. Follow these guidelines for safely handling the situation:

Keep Your Distance: Maintain a safe distance from the rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes can strike if they feel threatened or cornered, so give them space.

Do Not Approach or Disturb: Avoid approaching or attempting to interact with the rattlesnake. Do not try to handle or provoke it in any way.

Stay on Designated Trails: Stick to designated trails and paths while exploring the preserve. Rattlesnakes often prefer secluded areas, such as brushy or rocky terrain.

Watch Your Step: Be vigilant and watch where you walk, especially in areas with tall grass, rocks, or logs where snakes may hide. Use a walking stick to gently probe areas ahead of you.

Alert Others: If you see a rattlesnake on a trail, calmly alert other hikers or visitors to its presence, ensuring that they also keep their distance.

Give the Snake Space to Move: Rattlesnakes will usually retreat if given the opportunity. Allow the snake a clear path to move away from you without feeling threatened.

Remember, rattlesnakes are a natural part of the ecosystem in many wilderness areas, including VLT Preserves. By staying aware, respecting their space, and following these guidelines, you can safely enjoy your outdoor experience while helping to protect wildlife.

Ventura Land Trust preserves may close temporarily during rainy conditions to protect the integrity of the natural habitats and ensure visitor safety. Here are the reasons behind this decision:

Trail Preservation: Rainy weather can cause trails to become muddy and slippery, leading to erosion and damage to the trail surfaces. Closing preserves during rain helps prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the trails, preserving them for future use.

Habitat Protection: Heavy rain can impact fragile habitats and ecosystems within the preserves. Allowing trails to dry out helps minimize disturbances to sensitive plant life and wildlife, promoting overall habitat health.

Visitor Safety: Wet and muddy trails pose safety risks for visitors, increasing the likelihood of slips, falls, or accidents. Closing preserves during rainy weather helps ensure the safety of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
