Volunteer Docent Program - Under Construction, Stay Tuned For Next Training!
Join the Ventura Land Trust’s Volunteer Docent Program
Ventura Land Trust’s Volunteer Docent Program was born from the desire to develop a responsible recreation culture and conservation mindset among preserve visitors. VLT docents support our goal to balance public access and recreation with the preservation and enhancement of local biodiversity. An estimated 83,000 visitors came to Harmon Canyon Preserve in 2023. Because of this significant human presence, we must keep in mind that every footstep off-trail and into the creek channel has an impact on the plants and animals residing in the preserve.
Anyone interested is encouraged to apply. An ideal docent is a person with a passion for nature and education who enjoys having conversations with people from all walks of life. Prior teaching experience and knowledge of Ventura's unique biogeography are helpful but not required. Docents can volunteer at Harmon Canyon or Big Rock Preserves. Shifts can be any amount of time spent on the preserve engaging visitors while hiking, biking, or hanging out at the trailhead. Docents record their time on the preserves and are encouraged to have at least 4 hours a month.
Start by filling out our Volunteer Interest Form. For more information, please email volunteer@venturalandtrust.org or call 805-864-8044 Ext. 720.
Please note: the VLT Docent Program is currently under construction. With the Ventura Hills Nature Preserve opening soon, we are reworking the docent program to fit the needs of our growing volunteer network and organization. Please still reach out if you are interested in being a docent and we will be in touch soon with our next training session.
